Rhino poacher sent to jail

CHITWAN, June 28: A person convicted of killing four rhinos in Chitwan National Park has been sent to jail. He is Rajman Thapa Magar alias Rajman Magar. Magar was imprisoned on Sunday after being convicted of the death of four rhinos due to poaching in the CNP in fiscal year 2020/21. The 30-year-old Magar from Gaindakot Municipality-3 of Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta East) has been sent to jail, CNP Information Officer, Lokendra Adhikari, said. Magar was arrested with the help of local conservationists.  He was presented before the Nawalpur District Court and the court ordered him to be sent to jail.  Adhikari said legal action has been taken against 27 persons including Thapa this year on the charge of rhino poaching.

Alleged rhino poacher nabbed

CHITWAN, September 24: Police have arrested a person for his alleged involvement in rhino poaching in the Chitwan National Park.  The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police held Nange Tamang Lama, 59, at the request of the national park officials. Police confirmed the arrest of Lama, a permanent resident of Mugu district, currently living at Bouddha area in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-6. Information Officer of the Chitwan National Park, Lokendra Adhikari, said that Lama and 14 others had killed a rhino at Badarjhula post of the park a year ago.  Five persons were already held in connection to the case while others are still at large.  Lama is sent to judicial custody in Bharatpur prison.

Rhino found killed in CNP

CHITWAN, August 15: A rhino was found dead recently in the Chitwan National Park (CNP). Its horn was found polled.  The pachyderm of around 20-year-old was traced in morass at Batulichaur of Ghaghar under Madi Bagai sector in the CNP, said the CNP chief conservation officer Ananath Baral, adding that investigations were underway. It might have been killed at least two months ago because its horn was removed and there were like a gunshot wounds in the head, he added.  The gender identity of the dead rhino is still unknown as it had rotted. A joint patrol team of the Nepali Army and CNP employees found the rhino.  Immediately after the finding, a CNP high-level team launched investigation.  In the previous fiscal year, 2020/21, four rhinos were killed by poachers and 28 others died natural death, according to the CNP information officer Lokendra Adhikari. Five rhinos died natural death in one month alone in the current FY, 2021/22.  Despite efforts to control poaching, rhino poaching continued in the CNP.

Male rhino dies in Chitwan National Park

CHITWAN, July 23: A male rhino was found dead around Dhudhaura area in the Chitwan National Park on Thursday. The national park's officials said that the rhino was of around 25-30 years. Information Officer of National Park Lokendra Adhikari said that the rhino could have died in a brawl between the two male rhinos. Adhikari said that rhino's horn and hoof are kept safely. With this, three male rhinos died in Chitwan National Park in the Fiscal Year 2078/079.

Woman injured in rhino attack

CHITWAN, July 14: A woman has been injured in a rhino attack at Ujelinagar in western Chitwan. According to the District Police Office, Chitwan, Sunita Pariyar, 41, of Ujelinagar at Bharatpur metropolitan city has been injured when the rhino attacked her when she was heading towards a local Batuli Pokhari Community Forest to collect grass.  Pariyar has been receiving treatment at Chitwan Medical College, said Police.

Rhino horn found

CHITWAN, June 10: A rhino horn has been found at Kalika Municipality in eastern Chitwan. Division Forest Office Chitwan's information officer Balkrishna Khanal said the locals informed the Office about the finding of the rhino horn this morning at the Chaturmukhi community forest located at the Municipality's ward number 1. The horn is 8.5 inches long and weighs 445 grammes. The wildlife part has been brought safely to the Forest Office. It will be sent to the Chitwan National Park today itself. The Office suspects that the rhino horn might have broken and dropped when two rhinos had been fighting.

Fugitive involved in Rhino poaching arrested

CHITWAN, May 23: A man on the run since being sentenced to jail after being found guilty of Rhino poaching has been arrested. Sagar Praja known as Birendra Singh, a resident of Kalika municipality in Chitwan was arrested by the Chitwan National Park authorities. He was arrested from Thulechaur of Ghansikuwa in Byas municipality-11 of Tanahu on Friday. Praja was sentenced to 15 years in jail and fined Rs. 100,000 after being found guilty of killing a male Rhino in the park four years ago. He had been on the run ever since. Praja was sentenced on three acts of Rhino poaching and smuggling, said the park information officer Lokendra Adhikari. The park authorities have so far arrested four fugitive involved in wildlife poaching this fiscal year.
