UML ward-level conventions begin today

KATHMANDU, October 23: Ward-level conventions of the main opposition party CPN-UML are being held across the country on Saturday as as the part of the party's  10th National General Convention.  The ward conventions will be virtually inaugurated by the party's president KP Sharma Oli. The ward-level conventions will be followed by a municipality-level conventions starting on October 25. The Tenth General Convention of the CPN-UML will be held in Chitwan, Bagmati Province from November 26 to 28.  Electronic voting machines will be used for election purpose at the UML General Convention in Chitwan.  Meanwhile, a meeting of the UML Standing Committee on Friday appointed Surendra Pandey as the co-coordinator of the 21-member convention main management committee and Bishnu Rimal as the secretary and some other members of the committee. Vice President Rawal to resign During the meeting, UML Vice-president and coordinator of the 10-point proposal implementation facilitation task force Dr Bhim Bahadur Rawal, expressed his dissatisfaction over the non-implementation of the 10-point proposal and announced his resignation from the post. Talking to reporters after the meeting, he said that he would resign as President KP Sharma Oli was against the 10-point sentiment that he had submitted as a report with suggestions for the implementation of the proposal. Rawal said that he registered a dissenting opinion at the meeting as there was no proposal to nominate 10 percent in the central committee and only two central members were proposed. UML leader Joshi joins CPN (Unified Socialist)

KATHMANDU, October 7: A central committee member of CPN (UML), Bhanubakta Joshi has resigned from his post and joined CPN (Unified Socialist), a new political party formed by the splinter faction of the party-led by Madhav Kumar Nepal. Chairman of Unified Socialist Madhav Kumar Nepal formally welcomed Joshi to the party on Thursday. Joshi in his resignation had expressed his dissatisfaction to UML Chair KP Sharma Oli regarding implementation of the 10 points agreement and intra-party rifts. Joshi, who has also served as a Minister for Forest and Environment, was elected a member of parliament from Bajhang district.

Leaders of ‘new camp’ in CPN-UML call on party Chairman Oli

KATHMANDU, August 23: Leaders belonging to the ‘new camp’ in the CPN-UML, who were reportedly close to party’s then senior leader Madahv Kumar Nepal but did not join his CPN (Unified Socialist), are currently under discussion with party Chairman KP Sharma Oli at the latter’s private residence at Balkot in Bhaktapur. Leaders including Bhim Rawal, Yubaraj Gyawali, Surendra Pandey, Gokarna Bista, Bhim Acharya and Raghu Panta are currently at Balkot holding a meeting with KP Sharma Oli. “We want CPN-UML to withdraw its decision to take action against Nepal and other 13 lawmakers and leaders of the CPN (Unified Socialist) to return to the party,” said Yubaraj Gyawali. “We also believe that implementation of the 1o-point agreement will help the party to reunite.” These leaders have been lobbying to save the party unity though the CPN-UML has now been formally split as the splinter faction of UML-led by Nepal has already filed an application to register a new political party at the Election Commission.

UML Chairman Oli appeals against party split

KATHMANDU, August 17: CPN UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has appealed to all leaders and cadres to stand firm against the efforts intended to split the party. Issuing an appeal late night on Monday, Chairman Oli called on the party leaders, cadres, members of the House of Representatives and of National Assembly to be united against party break up. "Not any efforts to divide the UML and its parliamentary party on any pretext would be acceptable," the appeal stated, reminding that the utmost efforts were made to keep the UML intact after the Supreme Court verdict on March 7. As it failed, the UML is concentrated to keeping intact the party in view of its glorious history, argued the Chairman.  He further said even a taskforce was formed to solve the problems plaguing the party on its unification bid. It handed over the report and decision was made for its implementation.  Moreover, he said UML, as the party having a leading role on national politics, has its role in opposition now. The leaders and cadres should now be disciplined and active to restore party strength in the national politics. Chairman Oli also asserted that the UML has been the party synonymous to social justice and development in Nepal.  According to him, the coming general convention of the party will propose the statute based on the principle of people's multiparty democracy and democratization of party life.
